Castro Marim is located close to the Spanish border, above the banks of the river „Guadiana“ that forms the border between Portugal and Spain. High up on the hill, a massive castle, monument to the Moors, bids you welcome. The Roman cemetery is a point of interest. Castro Marim is best discovered on foot, wander through its streets and let it work its magic on you. In the summer months several cultural events take place in the castle’s inner courtyard - a medieval festival, live music and exhibitions. In culinary terms, too, Castro Marim is famous beyond the Portuguese borders for its annual, and legendary, “Festival de Caracois” (Snail Festival): gourmets sit in the open air at large beer tables and pick the snail delicacies out of the shells. Live music and drinks attract hundreds of visitors; the Spanish neighbours especially are very fond of this event. The way the snails are cooked is so delicious that it does not take any persuasion to devour these tasty treats.
Historically, the salt mines of Castro Marim were very important, but today the priority is the care and maintenance of the impressive nature reserve “Reserva Natural do Sapal” that stretches over 2,000 hectares and provides the life source for flora and fauna. The composition of the ground there is ideal in terms of humidity, salt and mud flats. The nature reserve is located at the mouth of the river Guadiana, and the dunes protect the area from the power of the Atlantic. It is the conflux of salt and fresh water that make this a valuable location for a lot of species.
The best time for bird watchers or hikers to visit is March, April or May. Many species stay all year, others are brooding. It is well worth visiting the reserve, there is a visitors centre with information, brochures, books and a small exhibition, or you can take part in a guided tour.
