Litoral Sul is the coastline and starts before Lagos in the West of the Algarve and extends a little bit past Tavira in the East of the Algarve. In the West, the landscape features cliffs and a very steep coastline, called “Barlavento” and ”Sotavento” in the East, also called “Sandalgarve”, which is much more soft and gentle with its sandy dunes. Two lagoons, “Ria de Alvor” and “Ria Formosa” characterise the “Litoral Sul”. The interaction of nature, the dunes, the composition of the ground with its high salt content and the effects of the weather are all contributing factors in making this such a unique landscape in this region of the Algarve. In the opinon of "visit eastalgarve", the Eastern Algarve is particularly delightful to discover. The fantastic vegetation, flora and fauna, find exactly the right kind of terrain here for producing amazing plants and animals. To mention just a few of them: agropyron, beach thistle, immortelles, cakile, alfalfa, thrift, pine, mastic, rockrose, reed, broom.. Fauna e.g.: turtle, cabreramouse, chameleon, green lizard.. It is no wonder then that “Birdwatching” is such an attaction here! Such a unbelievably large number of species: coot, little grebe, flamingo, white stork, bonelli`s eagle, peregrine falcon, kestrel, owl, sand piper, muddler, plover, tit, stilit, egret, tern, avocet, seagull, cormorant, blue heron, curlew…. A meeting point – worldwide – for professional and hobby ornithologists!! It is arguably the best place in Europe to observe, explore and determine those species. Birdwatching is no trendy new fashion; in the midst of nature you can enrich your knowledge. Please contact us if you would like to join a guided tour during your Algarve stay!
