Serra means strong undergrowth and plants that love the mediterranean climate. Oak forests and meadows also form part of the landscape of the Serra. You will find the occasional valleys or hills, rarely also streams. During the summer these are usually dry and invisible. This part of the Algarve is wonderful for walking and hiking, preferably not in the summer, because the area around the mountains of Monchique has cold winters and very hot summers. On the other side of the coin, there is the possibility of significant forest fires in summertime, so you should visit in the low season. What grows in the Serra? oleander, cork oaks, medronho, olives, almonds, figs, carobs, pine trees, reed, chestnut trees, eucalyptus trees, acacia, cistus, thyme, gorse, heather, lavender, rhododendron and fern.
Walking through the Serra, you might see some common and some rare animals like: wild rabbit, hare, wild boar, fox, frog, wild-cat, sparrow, screech owl, buzzard, hawk,. Attention: the emerald lizard and the hawk are both threatened with extinction!
